Angela Mamalis – Capturing Humanity in Motion
Angela Mamalis – Capturing the rhythms of life through photography
We are honored to present Angela Mamalis as the next featured artist in our Voices of Eutopia blog series. A passionate storyteller through the lens, Angela embodies the spirit of exploration, empathy, and connection. Her photographic journey is both personal and expansive, rooted in community engagement and a desire to capture the intricate rhythms of life.
A Visual Storyteller of Movement, Emotion, and Humanity
Angela’s journey into photography began with a series of self-portraits—a practice that she describes as challenging, rewarding, and enlightening. These early explorations became the foundation for a deeper artistic mission: to capture visual stories that reflect the interplay between humanity, environment, and art.
With a background in community education, particularly in the visual and performing arts, health, and wellbeing, Angela brings a deeply humanistic perspective to her practice. Her photography is informed by empathy and experience, shaped by her time working closely with diverse communities.
Upcoming Residency in Syros: A Dream Realized
Angela will soon take part in the Eutopia residency on Syros Island in May 2025. She describes this as a dream come true—an opportunity to evolve her practice in "The Gem of the Cyclades," and explore how photography can bring joy, insight, and reflection to both artist and viewer.
Lifelong Learner, Dedicated Educator
Angela's commitment to growth is reflected in her ongoing studies and extensive list of workshops. From analogue darkroom photography and travel photography to painting, writing, and body-sculpture photography, she continues to expand her artistic vocabulary.
She has also served in numerous education and leadership roles across organizations like Open Universities Australia, the University of Melbourne, the Centre of Adult Education, and the Australia Business Arts Foundation.
Photography as Presence
Angela’s work centers on the idea that photography is a way to be fully present. She seeks to document the spectrum of human experience—movement, stillness, emotion, love, and loss—in a way that is both immediate and timeless. For Angela, the camera is not just a tool but a companion in observation, allowing her to tell stories that might otherwise go unseen.
Women Who Click: Building a Creative Sisterhood
In addition to her solo work, Angela is the founder of Women Who Click: Women in Photography. Through this initiative, she offers workshops that empower women to learn, connect, and grow as visual storytellers. Her teaching, which includes years of facilitating community-based photography programs, is an extension of her belief in the transformative power of creativity.
Collaborations and Exhibitions
Angela is also a strong advocate for artistic collaboration. One notable project involved working with Julie Powell and Allison White to explore internal human struggles through visual narrative. Her images have appeared in group exhibitions including:
